Day 2, 22/11/09: Reiki - Nepal
This morning we headed out to the Stoupa where we did three Kora's (customary rite of circumambulation) before making our way up to its 2nd layer - bizarrely in doing this I felt an immense rush of internal excitement.
We visited a number of Temples including the White Temple & spent some time in the main Temple off the Stoupa as a number of Red Robe Monks were conducting a ceremony. As we entered the building the noise was immense; goose bumps once again ran down my arms; shivers up my spine; as I gulped I felt immense emotion building up inside; the collective sound; energy and vibration of the chanting, the drumming and the trumpets seemed to resonate within every cell of my body; my very being felt invaded; even my lungs vibrated! An immensely powerful and emotive experience; I wasn't expecting to feel such intensity; but wow was it felt.
From here we headed out to receive teachings on the principles of Thangka art; fascinating. It was so nice to be given the source and meanings behind the pictures; during this it suddenly dawned on me that the Nepalese Deities represent in a similar way, what we in the West refer to in archetypes. As I stood mesmerized; looking at the quality & details depicted around me I was suddenly filled with a deep sense of pride; an appreciation of 'my journey'. I'd never really considered where life could take me or on what journey; but last time I was here (3yrs ago) I'd released myself from a rut; I'd lost six stone and had come out to Nepal to challenge myself, find my freedom...suddenly all those feelings came flooding back; completely enveloping me only this time they come back with a sense of pride filling every pore; a realisation that this is 'me'; this is where I am and I'm stood here seeing, doing, experiencing all of this.
From here we headed to be given insight into the techniques & therapeutic benefits of singing bowls; fantastic! Each bowl literally has its own call; a call or tone which resonates on a personal level therefore your bowl is the one that resonates on your own frequency; the one that feels right. I have to say I was blown away; the rim of the bowl is gently stroked with a stick that has a suede end and a wood end (encouraging either low or high notes); at first I didn't think there was any sound but when the bowl was lifted to ear level the noise was amazing. The minute you start stroking your bowl you can feel the vibrations move in your hand & up your arm long before you recognise the sound flow.
Right now I'm feeling quite awe struck; I'm sat on a rooftop veranda overlooking the mighty Stoupa & it's just after 5pm; the sun is setting over a blue sky; the effect reflected in an incredible red haze & the mountains are but shadowy silhouettes supporting the sun's warm dance. What a moment; what a back drop; what a scene to close today's act on; as I sit here penning my journal I'm once again struggling to find words deep enough to capture these feelings; these emotions. Right now there is no past and no future; both body and mind are here in this moment; living, breathing & feeling...and with that thought...light!
In a moment of heightened activity the energy around Boudha lifted; people headed out to stand before the mighty Stoupa, as I looked down at them suddenly the scene was filled with light; a beautiful multi-coloured array. My heart stopped for a split second as I looked before me to see the Stoupa glowing - it was breath taking! Turns out a High Lama was visiting so the whole Stoupa had been decorated with fairy lights!
