Day 33, 05/12/07 - Patagonia Northern Icecap
Back up to the snowline today (though this time blessed with empty packs), we'd left camp at 7:15am and Ian's pace was blistering. When we stopped for a breather he apologised & said it was 100% because he was annoyed that we were late leaving (Evans!).
Today was a good day but on the way back from collecting the stash I overheard Ian & Ben talking in quite a sullen tone. I asked Ian if he was ok; since getting off the icecap his mood had dramatically changed. He said he'd decided not to carry on the trip after we got back to Bertrund; when I asked for the reason why, he said that he simply couldn't stick Evans a minute longer. Not quite sure what to think, obviously I don't want him to go but I also kind of think he's projecting things unnecessarily - with hindsight though, it's probably no different to the way i was reacting to Ariel.
When we got back to camp Ian went off to cook dinner, I'd asked Evans if I could borrow his needle & thread, 'sure, he said it's on my bed', 'how will I know which one that is?' Well, I opened their tent and Dale's side was absolute carnage, clothes piled everywhere, but Evans' side was neat, tidy with everything folded and laid out in lines. Incredible & completely unexpected!
