1. Borneo is the Earth's third largest island. It is exceeded in size only by Greenland and New Guinea. The island of Borneo is divided administratively into three countries: Indonesia, Malaysia & Brunei

2. With swampy coastal areas fringed with mangrove forests and a mountainous interior, much of the terrain was virtually impassable and unexplored. Its mountainous interior is covered with tangled rain forest populated chiefly by aboriginal Dayaks, who at one time excelled as head-hunters in intertribal warfare

3. Borneo's highest point is Mount Kinabalu in Sabah, Malaysia, with an elevation of 4,095m (13,435 ft). It is the third highest peak in South East Asia, making Borneo the world's third highest island

4. The Borneo rainforest is 130 million years old, making it the oldest rainforest in the world; 70 million years older than the Amazon rainforest

5. The most famous and unique mammals of the Borneo rainforests are, of course the Orangutans. They are indigenous to only Borneo Island (Pongo pygmaeus), and the northern parts of neighbouring Sumatra Island (Pongo abelii) and nowhere else in the world
